Chemical Equations

Unit Overview: For students to learn the properties of a chemical equation. They will need to be able to understand the law of conservation of mass. The students will prove their understand of the law of conservation of mass through balancing equations. They will be able to identify the type of chemical reaction taking place from a balanced equation.

Personal Achievement: I finally understood what the law of conservation of mass is and why it’s important to balance equations following this law.

Enduring Understanding:

There are 5 chemical equations

Synthesis- two compounds combine to form a new compound

Decomposition- A compound breaks down into other compounds

Combustion- the compound O2 is added into the equation, causing a combustion in the chemicals to form a new compound

Single displacement- Part of a compound is displaced when it’s other part defects to another compound.

AB+C=A+CB

Double displacement- When both compounds are displaced by one another

AB+CD=AD+CB

Reflection on Progress Towards the Standards:

Strengths: Demonstrates knowledge of all types of chemical reactions

Areas for Improvement: Applies mathematical representations to balance chemical equations
