The Poetry of Synthesis
Unit Overview:
We’ve spent the first 4 weeks this quarter looking at poetry and how it relates to the world. Having spent the first quarter understanding how authors develop complex characters, it was easy to understand poetic devices such as figurative language, imagery, and sound devices. I was then able to support my statements using evidence from text.
Enduring Understanding:
Where do you find poetry?
I find poetry in music, and spoken word artists such as Gary Turk, and Prince EA. Poetry in music can be found in lyrics explaining the problem the artist is protesting about, and these lyrics can send out a message. I gain understanding of the poet's message by analyzing the context, and specific devices like metaphors and rhymes.
Technical—
In order to create effective literary criticism, I learned I must have a strong introduction with a thesis that answers the questions. I must also support my assertions with specific evidence and comment about them. I must also organize my ideas in a logical way with transitions. Just as important is having correct conventions and using strong language that includes correct grammar, mechanics, spelling, and a formal style and tone.
Strengths
